Behold the Renault 20, complete with period-correct yellow headlights.

Top trivia: it had a bigger engined version called the 30. By way of compromise, both were replaced with the 25, because median.

I want yellow headlights. Or, failing that, yellow foglights. They're just so brilliantly French.

In other French news, I may be going to have a look at this within the next couple of days, assuming I can shake off whatever weird crappiness I seem to have come down with:

Renault 20 and 30 are still cars that I haven't seen. I'm not even sure if they were even sold here.

Oooh, a 306! They were quite a thing once, as was the 309 that was originally supposed to be a Talbot and got an out-of-sequence Peugeot number instead.

Yellow lights were used because they were thought less likely to dazzle the oncoming, which was because they weren't very bright. In short the French required them because they were crap.

I still find them rather handsome, particularly in three-door form with some sporty trim, and I've heard nothing but good things about the way they drive—praise I'm more than willing to believe, as the driver of another nineties Peugeot.

I know full-well that yellow lights are shitty by design; I still want some.

They were larger cars from a downmarket manufacturer and therefore worth nothing secondhand and disappeared rapidly. The 25, the Safrane and the Vel Satis went the same way. I can't recall having seen a Vel Satis for some time and they were being made quite recently.

Note also the typically French three stud wheels.

I have to admit that within this week I have been checking how much Avantimes cost nowadays. I might be a bit mad...

I see them occasionally, which is a little surprising as Renault never sold them here.

Avantime wasn't sold in Finland either but at least one has been imported.
